1. Sea Otters

Sea otters are one of the most beloved animals living in Avila Beach Harbor. These playful marine mammals are frequently seen floating on their backs while grooming their fur or cracking open shellfish. 5. Humpback Whales

During the warmer months, humpback whales visit the waters off the Central Coast near Avila Beach to feed on schools of anchovies and sardines. These whales are known for dramatic breaching and tail slapping behaviors that make whale watching an unforgettable experience. Sometimes like in the years of 2012 and 2015 groups of humpback whales lunge fed right in the Port San Luis and Avila Beach Harbors. That was an amazing sight to see and hope to see this again in 2026!

Brown pelicans are iconic seabirds of the Central Coast. They are often seen gliding above the harbor before diving dramatically into the water to catch fish. 9. Oyster Catchers

Among the mussel and barnacle-covered rocks of Avila Beach lives this stout shorebird with a gleaming reddish bill, yellow eyes, and pink legs. Apart from these highlights, their dark bodies—black on the head and neck, chocolate brown elsewhere—disappear into the dark rocky background. Look for them foraging on falling tides, when exposed marine organisms are vulnerable to quick strikes from their sharp, stout bills. Oystercatchers remain paired year-round, and often fly in duets over water and shore giving their pleasant whistling calls. On of our most favorite sea bird to spot and we seem to have lots of them in Avila Beach and Pismo Beach and we spot them regularly on our Harbor Safari Tours.
