Best Time To See Whales.
If you are planning a whale watching trip on California’s Central Coast, one of the most common questions is: When is the best time to see whales in Pismo Beach, Avila Beach and along the Central Coast?
The good new is that whales can be seen off Pismo Beach and Avila Beach during much of the year. However, different species arrive during different seasons, making each time of the year unique for wildlife viewing.

Winter: Gray Whale Migration (December-April)
Winter brings one of nature’s most impressive spectacles-the annual migration of California Gray Whales. These whales travel thousands of miles between Alaska and the warm lagoons of Baja California, Mexico. Southbound Whales begin appearing along the Central Coast in December and January, while northbound whales, including mothers with calves, are commonly seen from February through April. March and April are often excellent months for shore based whale watching around Pismo Beach and Shell Beach. If the weather is mild we can get out on the boat and view from the waters also.
Spring: A Season of Transition (April-June)
Spring is one of the most exciting times to be on the water. Gray whales are still migrating north, while humpback whales begin arriving in greater numbers as baitfish populations increase along the Central Coast. During this time, whale watchers may see humpback whales feeding, breaching, and tail slapping offshore. Dolphins, sea lions, harbor seals, and sea otters are also frequently observed.
Summer and Fall: Peak Humpback Whale Season (June-November)
For Avila Beach Ocean Safaris, summer and fall represent the best overall whale watching season in Pismo Beach and Avila Beach and along the Central Coast. Large numbers of humpback whales arrive to feed on anchovies, sardines and other baitfish concentrated along the Central Coast. Humpback whales are our favorite whale to view! July thru October is often considered the peak period, which consistent sightings and spectacular surface behavior including breaches, lunge feeding, and close encounters with feeding birdlife and dolphin.

Can You See Whales From Shore?
YES! Absolutely. Sometimes the humpback whales can be seen from Dinosaur Cave Park in Shell Beach and the Pismo Beach Pier. One of my favorite spots to view whales and spot them before my trips is the Pirates Cove Parking lot up at Cave Landing Road in Avila Beach.
A boat based whale watching trip dramatically increases your chances of finding whales and observing natural behaviors up close while maintaining safe viewing distances.
What Is The Best Month For Whale Watching in Avila Beach and Pismo Beach?
If your goal is simply to maximize the chances of seeing whales, July through October is often the best overall period thanks to the abundance of feeding humpback whales along the Central Coast. The water warms up, the baitfish are much more abundant closer to shore and you will really get to see a myriad of birdlife, intermingled with sea lions, harbor porpoise, dolphin along with humpback whales eating.
